The French composer Charles Dieupart settled in London in 1703. From then until his death, he worked there as a musician, composer, and teacher. His famous Six Suittes inspired the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach to create his English Suites, which bear their name because they were dedicated to “a distinguished Englishman” – a reference that could only have meant Dieupart. This program invites audiences on a journey to Charles Dieupart’s London: to the sounds that resonated there, the music he himself played, and the story of how this Frenchman, living in England, inspired Bach, who from Weimar honored the talent of his French colleague.

Without having played together before, four musicians decided in 2019 to participate in the German Music Competition as Marsyas Baroque. Their endeavor proved successful, earning them a scholarship from the German Music Council, inclusion in the national Young Artists Concerts selection, and the special prize from the Freiburg Ensemble Academy. Shortly thereafter, the ensemble also won first prize at the prestigious Biagio Marini Competition in Neuburg an der Donau.

Marsyas Baroque primarily performs virtuosic works from the 17th and 18th centuries on period instruments in their own arrangements. The ensemble tours nationally and internationally, appearing at festivals such as the Thüringer Bachwochen, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Bachfest Leipzig, Trigonale Festival, and Winter in Schwetzingen.

We are delighted about the cooperation with the Foundation Kloster Steinfeld.
