Fonte Vivace – Early Music Festival in Aachen

April 27 – May 4, 2025, in Aachen and its surroundings

Fonte vivace (Italian): a lively, bubbling spring, but also a historical source, source research—inseparably linked to authentic performance practice. Here, the creativity of past centuries flows freely, brought to life by outstanding musicians of our time.

Program

About the festival

The centuries-old history of our imperial city and the vibrant liveliness of its small, culturally rich old town today are reflected in the Fonte vivace festival. From April 27 to May 4, 2025, a carefully curated program of concerts and accompanying events offers a unique opportunity to hear extraordinary artists in top-tier international early music ensembles in Aachen and its surroundings.

Five evening concerts are at the core of the festival. In addition, young and adult amateurs will have a stage, and a family concert as well as a lecture concert will bring musicology to life for both young and older audiences. A matinee concert featuring members of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra is also part of the program.

Artistic Direction

The festival’s artistic directors are Lorenzo Alpert and Judith Konter.

The Argentinian musician Lorenzo Alpert studied bassoon and historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, graduating with a concert diploma for historical bassoons. It was here that Jordi Savall took notice of him and, together with him, Montserrat Figueras and Hopkinson Smith, founded the ensemble Hespèrion XX. In this ensemble, Lorenzo Alpert played flutes and percussion instruments.

From 1991 to 2020, he was the principal bassoonist of Concerto Köln and, from 2016 to 2018, he served as the ensemble’s artistic director. His focus lay particularly on integrating musicological research into instrumental practice. Based on this approach, he developed new concepts for the performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

Until 2018, Lorenzo Alpert taught historical bassoon and chamber music at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva. He regularly gives courses in Italy, France, Spain, and the USA.

Judith Konter studied flute in Aachen and Cologne, later specializing in Baroque traverso and historical performance practice at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Her most influential teachers on this instrument were Martin Sandhoff and Wilbert Hazelzet. From 1996 to 2004, she performed across Germany with the Baroque ensemble “La Courtoisie.”

In the flute quartet arcadie, she is mostly heard playing the modern bass flute and passionately arranges music for the ensemble. Teaching has always been close to her heart, with engagements at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, the music seminar of the University of Cologne, and the Aachen Music School.

Since 2021, she has been a co-founder and artistic director of the Aachen Living Room Concerts.
