250 years ago, the British musicologist Charles Burney traveled across Europe to gain an understanding of the “current state” of music. With a stack of letters of recommendation in his pocket, he set out, heard the young Mozart in Italy, and met J.A. Hasse, C.P.E. Bach, and many other prominent figures of the time. He recorded his impressions in detailed diaries.
The young Berlin ensemble Das Kolorit and reciter Viola von der Burg bring Burney’s lively, sometimes sharp, amusing, and insightful descriptions of his experiences to life, paired with many of the pieces he actually heard, painting a colorful picture of the 18th century. The program features music by C.P.E. Bach, W.A. Mozart, W. von Bayreuth, A. Vivaldi, among others, along with anecdotes and texts from Burney’s diaries.
Das Kolorit was selected as the ensemble-in-residence for Schloss Rheinsberg for the 2023/2024 season. Performing regularly as the “Rheinsberg Court Ensemble,” they gave concerts at the palace. In 2024, the ensemble received the #MusikerZukunft scholarship from the Deutsche Orchester-Stiftung to develop and premiere the audiovisual installation Il tempo perduto.
